Resilient flooring on the district test list
Resilient flooring is on the district's five-material list for small residential remodels. Its definitions class vinyl and other resilient coverings and mastics as Category I nonfriable material: whole, intact tile is outside the regulated category. Sanding, grinding, cutting or smashing it in a demolition brings it in, with containment, wet methods and, from 100 square feet, notice to the district.
What happens to the waste depends on its condition. Regulated asbestos waste has to leave with an EPA-licensed hazardous waste transporter, as the district's FAQ states, and a landfill or hauler may set conditions of its own. Floor area, layers, mastic and waste handling set the price.
A full kitchen gut that lifts the floor may also expose duct boots and wall bases that need testing, which asbestos abatement before remodel or demolition explains. Browse the Hayward Asbestos Removal homepage for other services.
